Hickey Smith Helps Provide Safe Drinking Water to Children and Their Families

PASADENA, Calif. - Sept. 1, 2015 - PRLog -- Hickey Smith LLP today announced the completion of additional clean drinking water projects in conjunction with Got Agua?, a charitable organization whose mission is to provide clean, safe, sustainable drinking water to children and their families living in India, Africa and the Philippines.

“Lack of clean drinking water is a leading cause of disease and poverty across the globe,” said David M. Hickey, managing partner of Hickey Smith. “The lack of clean drinking water disproportionally impacts mothers and their daughters who are often charged with collecting water for their families. Deep in the jungle, Philippine communities in Buenavista, Guimaras are home to hundreds of children who walk more than two miles to bring drinking water to their households. Representatives from the Hickey Smith team traveled to the area to work with local government units and volunteers from Got Agua? to complete the rehabilitation of four drinking wells and the installation of two water pumping and piping systems during a twelve-day blitz. Together, these wells will serve more than 2,700 residents in the rural communities of Getulio, San Miguel, and Navatas.

“Every 20 seconds, a child dies of a water-related illness,” stated Madeleine Myronowicz, Vice President for Got Agua?. “Our mission is to provide safe water supplies, sanitation, and hygiene facilities so that children and their families can lead healthy lives.”

An annual event since 2010, site identification and pre-project planning for this year’s water projects took place over the past two months. Project locations are selected primarily based on community involvement, including community willingness to take an active role in project development and take ownership of the project after the initial work has been completed. By providing access to local, functioning wells, the Buenavista community can now work together to efficiently deliver water to each household.
