Understanding the five different positions Jarryd Hayne can play and how this won him a job!

Versatility is the reason Jarryd Hayne has become the first skilled offensive player to make an NFL roster. In the end he made it impossible for the 49ers coach to release him because he can help the team in so many different ways.

Hayne has the potential to play five different positions for the 49’ers this season. Here is a look at these:

Punt Returner - In this capacity, Hayne will play a very similar role similar to when he was a fullback in The NRL. He will receive the ball from punts from the opposition. The pre-season has shown his confidence under the highball and vision to read the field quickly, which has made him a success in this position. This facet of the game was a real weakness of the 49ers last year averaging only 6.3 yards per return. In the pre-season hayne has averaged over 18 yards!
Kick Returner - When oppositions kick off, Hayne will be also be utilized. Many players who receive the ball in their endzone (or in-goal area) surrender and opt for a restart from 20 yards out. Hayne has the ability to return the ball further than 20 yards though and put his team in a stronger attacking position.
Running Back - Set behind the line of scrimmage with the quarterback, this is one of the most important position on the field. The quarterback will often hand the ball to the running back who will be tasked with rushing the ball, often right into the middle of defenses. Importantly, he may be asked to block blitzing linebackers (defenders) to protect the quarterback on passing plays and has proven he can hit hard enough to do this successfully.
Wide Receiver - When the quarterback throws the ball downfield, it will normally be to a player known as a wide receiver. While the team has specialist wide receivers, with his excellent hands Hayne would be an option downfield if necessary.
Special Team’s Tackler- When the 49’ers kickoff or punt the ball, Hayne will be used for his speed and tackling ability. He will be used to chase the ball downfield and tackle the opposition punt receiver, like he would do in League when chasing his own kicks.
