Physiotherapy Treatment for Whiplash

Whiplash occurs most commonly when a person is in either a rear end or side impact motor vehicle accident, and is caused by sudden and rapid movement of the head and neck in a forward and backward motion.

Oct. 22, 2015 - PRLog -- Whiplash is a strain of the neck muscles and surrounding soft tissue of both the neck and upper back. This form of injury is usually temporary and most people will make a full recovery from a whiplash injury. The more you know about whiplash, the more you are able to participate more fully in the recovery process. Within the first few days of the injury occuring, there can be pain, stiffness and even headaches.

Symptoms can persist over a long period of time in rare cases. And just as soreness or stiffness can linger during other injuries, whiplash symptoms can feel the same for days or weeks. It is important to try to continue with as much normal activity as possible and resting for more than one or two days can end up prolonging the pain and your recovery time. While treating your whiplash, our Physiotherapists will assess the severity of your injury by using hands on mobilization, ultrasound, and either heat or ice with electrical stimulation.

The Physiotherapist may also advise that you avoid prolonged sitting, avoid contact sports and re-arrange your work space so you do not create further injury. The safest way to prevent further whiplash injuries is to ensure that your head rest in your vehicle is properly adjusted so that the top of your head is in line with the top of the head rest.
