Follow on Google News | Contemporary Artist Takes Art Lovers on a Journey of His Life Through His PaintingsSteven Cogle Debuts His New Collection at House of Art Gallery in Brooklyn
“The reason I titled the show ‘My Art Looks Back, Less I forget’ was after reading a book called "My Soul Looks Back, Less I Forget" which featured past quotes from famous people of color. Reading many of these famous quotes quickly showed me how much they pertain to today & reminded me of how much your past can shape your future. Each work shown features people, objects & subject matter that has in some way or another had a significant impact in my life growing up & in some cases help me become the person I am today. - Steven Cogle The exhibition will debut on Saturday, November 7th and will end on November 28th. For the duration of the exhibition, there will be several events such as the Opening Reception, Teenagers Art Workshop, Artist Presentation and Discussion, and Artist Closing presentation. For the exact dates and times, you can visit hoagallery.com. About Steven Cogle’s "My Art Looks Back, Less I Forget" exhibition: My paintings display what is in me-tribal Africa crossed with urban blight. "A lot of bad stuff went down in East New York when I was growing up". By layering the paint on the canvas, I am also layering the experience of what I saw: tragedy, loss, confusion, hope, prayer, fantasy, survival. "These things swirl around us all the time." Some folks call my work random. Random maybe; I call it authentic, honest, and genuine. "I've got to go with what I know." Gallery Director of House of Art Gallery, Richard Beavers, shares his thoughts on Steven Cogle’s work: "Steven's work is refreshing, raw and honest. His brush strokes are strong and filled with passion that very much represents the fortitude it has taken to navigate in today’s society" Come join Steven Cogle for the opening of his “My Art Looks Back, Less I Forget” exhibition and observe his journey and find out what/who impacted his life for him to be the person he is today! It will be held on Saturday, November 7th, from 7pm to 10pm, at House of Art Gallery, 408 Marcus Garvey Blvd, Brooklyn, NY. For more information, visit hoagallery.com.
