“Growing up in a digital world, computer science is important for students’ futures, even if they don’t end up in STEM careers,” says Jason McKenna, Director of Global Education Strategy for Robomatter. “There’s a real need for digital skills in the workforce, and that need will only continue to grow. Additionally, no matter what the field, employers need workers with the critical and analytical thinking skills, the kind that are developed from studying STEM subjects such as computer science.” “It’s now the 21st century which means an overhaul has been long overdue for our education landscape. By bringing in STEM CS, we hope to address the gap and bring our education system and our schools up to par with the rest of the developed world,” says E H Lim, CEO of Eduspec Holdings Berhad. The launch coincides with the Malaysian government’s initiative to increase the number of students who pursue STEM-related careers by 60% and will also complement Malaysia’s national curriculum. The STEM CS program, which is already being implemented in schools in South Korea and Taiwan, will also be introduced in other ASEAN countries, including Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Myanmar.
