HOLLAND, Mich. - Oct. 29, 2015 - PRLog -- Author Paul Swets reports that happiness research is booming.  "Positive psychologists have found a way to measure well-being.  As a result, we know what makes people happy."

One psychologist, Professor Ed Diener, studied some of the happiest people in various parts of the world and found that "all of them had close, supportive family and friends."

Close and supportive family and friends is the focus of Finding Happiness.   Released this month by Crosslink Publishing, Finding Happiness assists readers with practical guidelines to build stable relationships. Effective listening and talking are key to making relationships stable and supportive.

“With all our texting and time spent on social media, we convey what we’re doing or thinking, but we’re loosing our ability to talk and listen well.  We are not building relationships.”

Swets asserts that, “Happiness depends on relationships.  Without relationship, there is no friendship.  Without friendship, there is no effective communication. Without communication, there is no closeness, purpose, or hope.  Without stable relationships, there is no happiness."

Paul Swets maintains that “Happiness is available to anyone through strong relationships with friends and family, through giving back to society, through pursuing a life-purpose, and through being transformed by lasting hope. ”

Finding Happiness helps people increase their happiness by showing them how to make slight adjustments in the way they communicate.  Swets says that when we don’t make these adjustments, “we are like a boat in high winds without an anchor or rudder. Relational turbulence occurs when we misunderstand others and allow emotional distance to storm between us and our friends or family members.  But when we make the right adjustments, we decrease the threat of relational dysfunction and increase our sense of wellbeing.”

According to Swets, “Finding Happiness shows how to develop communication skills that add a satisfying bond to relationships and increase understanding.   The result?  Stable relationships that help us feel more connected, more emotionally strong, more satisfied, more happy.”

“Increased happiness is available to anyone and enables them to give back to society, to purse a life-purpose, and to be transformed by eternal hope. ”

C. Kemmons Wilson, of the founding family of Holiday Inns, responded to a pre-publication manuscript, "Read Finding Happiness.  It's transformational!"

Dr. Swets is author of four books.  He earned a bachelors degree in psychology from Hope College and a doctoral degree in communication from the University of Michigan.  Paul’s first book, The Art of Talking So That People Will Listen, is published by Simon & Schuster and has sold over 130,000 copies.
