Nearly three years ago, Aviva Gittle, children's book author and owner of Aviva Gittle Publishing, started a contest for self-publishers called The Gittle List. She wanted to shine a light on the self-publishers who, in her opinion, are creating quality books for children.

Unlike other book competitions, there is only one category (children’s picture books) and one judge—Aviva Gittle. She says, "I have my own set of criteria, but it often comes down to one question: Would I enjoy reading this to my grandsons?”

It started in 2013 when Aviva agreed to review other self-published children’s picture books. It opened up a whole new world of children’s books to her. "I was no longer confined to the classics or to the authors that Amazon showcased because they were popular." (As most of us know from high school, popular isn’t always better.)

The 10 Gittle List Winners get:

But, the entrants also have several opportunities throughout the submission period to earn free publicity for their books.
