Follow on Google News | Montserrat College of Art Students Collaborate with Cape Ann Museum to Create Exciting New ExhibitSpin-Off is an exciting new collaboration between Beverly’s Montserrat College of Art and the Cape Ann Museum inspired by a course at Montserrat. The exhibition's opening reception will be Friday, Nov. 20, 5-7 pm at 27 Pleasant St., Gloucester, MA.
The 15-week class focuses on the connections between the region’s art, the environment and the economy, with learning experiences offered both in and outside of the classroom. Students tour the landscape, which has inspired creativity and industry for hundreds of years. And they examine the art and objects on exhibit at the Museum, all of which are inspired by Cape Ann. The culmination of the class is a “spinning off,” the creation of visual responses to this immersive experience. Designed by Montserrat Professor Diane Ayott, this upper level experiential learning (XL) course introduces students to the history of Cape Ann as reflected through the Museum’s collection. Exhibiting students are: Bri Bain, Kale Baker, Theresa Dennehy, Kendall Hanselmann, LiAnn Natter, Sebastian Sawyer and Kelly Schultz. In addition to Professor Ayott, the course is supported by Teaching Associate, Kevin Lucey, a recent Montserrat graduate, Courtney Richardson, former Director of Education at the Museum and Museum docent and long-time Montserrat associate, Trina Smith. Montserrat College of Art is a small, private, residential college of visual art and design, founded in 1970, by artists, for artists, educating the creative problem solvers of tomorrow. The college offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, continuing education classes and four galleries exhibiting works by international, national and regional contemporary artists, intended to offer art education beyond the Montserrat classrooms through a series of public lectures, gallery talks, catalogs and events. www.montserrat.edu The recently renovated Cape Ann Museum celebrates the art, history and culture of Cape Ann – a region with a rich and varied culture of nationally significant historical, industrial and artistic achievement.
