Periodontitis (gum disease) is dangerous. It is an infection of the gums that starts out as plaque, an opaque film on the teeth that hardens from tartar. It begins with bacterial growth in the mouth and may end – if not properly treated – with tooth loss due to destruction of the tissue that surrounds the teeth. Dr. Roya Nematollahi’s goal is to prevent gum disease in her patients before a severe case like this develops.

Plaque is the primary cause of gum disease. However, other factors can contribute to periodontal disease. These include hormonal changes, illnesses, bad habits, poor oral hygiene habits, and family history of dental disease. Symptoms include but are not limited to: gums that bleed during and after tooth brushing, red, swollen, or tender gums, and persistent bad breath or taste in the mouth.

During a dental exam, Dr. Roya Nematollahi will check for gum bleeding, swelling, firmness, and pocket depth (the space between the gum and tooth; the larger and deeper the pocket, the more severe the disease). She will also check for teeth movement and sensitivity as well as proper teeth alignment.

Gum disease can be reversed in nearly all cases when proper plaque control is practiced. Treatment options depend on the stage of disease, how a patient may have responded to earlier treatments, and overall health.
