STOWMARKET, U.K. - Dec. 19, 2015 - PRLog -- Memory foam dog beds have been around for a while now. Whether you visit a discount pet store or a trendy boutique, there are many examples - from shredded foam bits to solid mattresses with bolsters and even designer look and feel sofas. So, the question is are they worth the money and will a memory foam bed make a difference to the quality of your dog's sleep.

Well, to answer this question, we need to look at the materials used in the main parts of the bed and how it is constructed.

First of all, there are many options to consider. The cheaper products are usually made of shredded foam or have one layer of thin foam. Both options are OK and can often be a better choice than some of the standard foam beds which contain very little padding or are made of inferior fabrics and stuffing materials.

However, it should be a major objective that the bed you choose will offer the correct level of support for the size of the dog you have.

A shredded memory foam bed can be comfortable and the build up of air in between the foam bits can offer a decent level of comfort in the short term. However, over time these beds can go out of shape, the foam can clump together and there is no real evidence to show that they offer the right support for your dog.

The thin layer memory foam option is something to consider if you are on a tight budget and you have a smaller dog. However, this type of bed probably won't provide the optimum level of support for the long term, especially if you have a large dog.

If you are looking for a bed that will last, a double layer memory foam dog bed is where the smart money is. This is because it not only offers a memory foam top layer, but it also gives you a higher density foam bottom layer. This will give the top layer something to sink into as it meets the lower layer of foam. This gradual pressure will not put a strain on your dog's pressure points and this is what some people class as a truly orthopedic quality bed for your dog.

If you choose this option then you must decide on the right size and thickness for your dog and this is usually anything from 3-6 inches in total. The ratio being 50% memory foam and 50% higher density foam.

The wonderful thing about this style of bed is that it reduces pressure on the joints, muscles and any sores your dog might have and it is a great bed for dogs suffering with joint pain, arthritis or other muscle or bone diseases.

The quality of the bed should also be matched with a high quality cover - preferably one which is breathable and water resistant at the same time. Even better is a double cover, which means that you get a sewn in cover for the mattress and a removable cover as well. The removable cover should have quality zips, stitching and be made of a fabric that will not only take the day to day cleaning, chewing and playing but also provide a cool and comfortable place to rest and sleep.

Finally, the polyurethane viscoelastic properties of memory foam dog beds make it inhospitable for things like dust mites and bed bugs. This makes it a great choice if your dog suffers with allergies.

So if you can justify the higher price tag and want the best of rest and sleep for your dog, a memory foam dog bed could very well be one of the best long-term investments you can make for your dog's comfort and wellbeing.
