Pearl Theater Honors Black History Month with August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson!

The Piano Lesson runs January 29 – February 14, 2016 at the Pearl Theater

HOUSTON - Jan. 2, 2016 - PRLog -- In 1936 Pittsburgh, Boy Willie and his sister Berniece battle over the future of a treasured heirloom: a piano with unique ancestral carvings by their grandfather, an enslaved plantation carpenter. He wants to sell the piano to buy land. She insists that the instrument carries too much history to cast aside. In a home haunted by memories, the issue of whether or not to sell cuts deeply and raises questions about honoring the past or moving into the future.

Director Dabrina Sandifer says of The Piano Lesson, “I am greatly pleased to be working on this strong piece with such a dynamic cast/crew. To me, this is a story of redemption, family units, legacy, and the quest of defining oneself as an individual within the given units of family, relationships, society, etc. in addition to the suffocating binds of racism, classism, etc.

I allow room for the spectator's interpretation; however, I'd also like for them to consider what their legacy is, what they do with it, and how to best put it to use.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson died in 2005 after completing ten plays chronicling the African-American experience in the 20th century, decade by decade. The Piano Lesson is the 4th play in this series.
