Clinical Pastoral Education Winter Unit To Be Offered At St Johns Hospital

Jan. 10, 2016 - PRLog -- St. John's Episcopal Hospital has announced that they will be starting a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Winter Extended Unit in January 2016, and the Pastoral Care Department is now accepting applications. Supervised by resident chaplain Rabbi Dr. Hillel Fox and managed by Diplomate Training-Supervisor, Rev. Dr. Francine Hernandez, the CPE seminar entitled "Exploration of the Inner World", includes the development of basic pastoral care-giving skills such as active listening, theological reflection, self examination, psycho-social, cultural and family systems interaction, along with personal and interpersonal awareness. Interns will also have the benefit of shadowing hospital staff chaplain Rabbi Zalman Baida on his rounds.

CPE is a professional education and training program for pastoral care.  It brings ordained clergy, theology students, members of religious orders, volunteers of Bikur Cholim and various chesed organizations and other qualified lay persons into supervised encounters with people who are hospital patients, nursing home residents, homebound patients, trauma victims and disabled citizens within the community. The ethnic populations served by Episcopal Health Service facilities reflect the diversity of the New York area.

The Winter CPE Unit requires one clinical day a week of hospital rounds training and another half-day of group education with individual supervision. The hospital will also be offering a Summer Intensive CPE Unit. Cost is $600 per unit. The program can be offered in quarter-units for those people needing more flexibility.
