USS Rhino Announced as Model Joint Venture at CVMSDC Summit

Supplier Diversity is hitting the southern manufacturing sector with a bang

Feb. 19, 2016 - PRLog -- “In an era of strategic and technological disruption, joint ventures and strategic alliances are a smart and effective way for diverse suppliers to partner together to meet changing market needs.” – Gwendolyn Whitfield, Ph.D. University of North Carolina at Asheville

GREENVILLE, SC, February 17, 2016

As the Carolinas-Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council (CVMSDC) Summit kicks off its meetings, excitement swirls around the opportunities available to Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs). Initially there is some skepticism with how an MBE can break through the crowded market to capture some of the booming manufacturing sector, but those listening are becoming convinced.  With keynote speakers sharing statistics regarding the success and growth in the MBE sector, and professing informative quotes like the one above from Dr. Whitfield, the room buzzes with enthusiasm.

National certifying agencies, such as the National Minority Supplier Diversity Council (NMSDC), have now made it possible to certify firms with a non-minority partner, as long as the minority partner has at least 51 percent ownership in the company with both firms offering its own individual capabilities and value to allow the joint venture to pursue opportunities that neither firm would be able to attain alone.  The CVMSDC Summit introduced such a model Joint Venture company, “USS Rhino,” to share its background and future plans for capturing a piece of success from the increase in supplier diversity programs in the manufacturing industry.

USS Rhino, LLC is a Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) with MBE status and has been vetted and certified through the NMSDC and locally through the CVMSDC.  The company was formed through the combination of two individually recognized successful small businesses, US&S, Inc. and Rhino Assembly Corporation. Together, USS Rhino becomes an industrial distributor and facilities maintenance provider specializing in innovative products and technologies that enhance the assembly process in manufacturing.

Both companies have proven industry experience and resources that they have united to achieve marketplace goals that neither could achieve alone. This is what makes them stand out as a successful model Joint Venture at the CVMSDC Summit.  They share a common set of core values and recognize that diversity can always bring a fresh perspective to the table.  In addition, they are able to couple the MBE supplier experience from US&S with the expanded product offerings of Rhino Assembly to form a model JV that is armed and ready to assist supplier diversity programs. The goal is to empower customers to be more productive, build a better quality product, and maintain a safe environment for their workers.

According to the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) Annual Report in 2014, MBEs are generating $400 Billion in economic impact. With these numbers growing each year, it is no doubt that manufacturers like BMW in Greer, SC who hosts one of the largest supplier diversity meetings in the southeast, are making supplier diversity programs a priority.

The CVMSDC recognizes that the MBE companies are becoming a force positioned to reap the benefits of increased spend in supplier diversity programs throughout the manufacturing sector.   They used the model Joint Venture, USS Rhino, as an example of how to expedite the process to get your foot in the door and grow your business.

As stated in her Graziado Business Review, Dr. Whitfield states “The benefits of strategic alliances for minority businesses are tremendous, whether they partner with other diverse suppliers or majority-owned firms. These firms will be better able to provide the scale and scope of their services without additional capital requirements and to position themselves to seek equity investment in the future.”

While mergers and acquisitions are not for every firm, the CVMSDC Summit and Model JV spotlight on USS Rhino surely evoked a buzz of excitement for others looking to invest in the strategies that could prove to be vital for supplier diversity success.
