Spring Auction of Fine and Decorative ArtThe March 12th auction at Shapiro Auctions will feature works by American, European, Asian and Russian fine and decorative art masters.
By: Shapiro Auctions Among the American works presented at auction will be a quiet landscape created by a leading member of the Hudson River School, Sanford Robinson Gifford. The paysage was gifted by the artist to the son of Archibald McIntyre, the co-founder of the Adirondack Iron and Steel Company. The sale will likewise feature a selection of works by America’s leading 19th and 20th century artists, including Leon Kroll, Albert Herter, Jules Eugene Pages, Reginald Marsh, Emma Fordyce Macrae and Max Weber among others. Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse’ Taking place in the heart of New York’s Asia Week, the sale at Shapiro Auctions will also prominently showcase a large selection of Chinese works of art, including an impressive collection of blanc de chine and a selection of jade carvings. In the fine art category, there will also be paintings by the Vietnamese-French artists Le Pho and Vu Cao Dam. Officially the only auction house in the United States that maintains a strong focus on the art of Russia and the CIS, with this auction Shapiro will not disappoint lovers and collectors of Eastern European art. The sale will present a spectacular selection of works from such masters as Stepan Kolesnikov, Franz Roubaud, Arthur Fonvizin, Gregory Gluckmann, Boris Anisfeld, Komar & Melamid, Ilya Bolotowsky, Vladimir Yakovlev and Eduard Steinberg. Included in the sale is a powerful portrait of Vera Ketlinskaya by Evgeny Kibrik, a student of Pavel Filonov. This portion of the auction will also fearture an impressive selection by Georgian and Armenian artists, such as Richard Zommer, Nikolai Bogdanov-Belsky, Merab Abramishvili, Georgy Bashindzhagyan, Alexander Bashbeuk-Melikian and others. A large portion of the auction will also be devoted to Russian Orthodox icons. The sale will feature more than 70 icons, with some magnificent examples dating back to the 17th century. As always, Shapiro Auctions will also present a selection of Soviet posters, rare books, bronzes and decorative art to please all tastes.
