In 1971 they were moved to the iconic assembly hall which served as their home until they were recently permanently removed. To date, eight turnstiles have been sold for prices averaging $1,500 with some sales over $2,000. Todd Reid, Manager of Indiana University Surplus Stores, says that “We feel these are priceless due to the fact that they came from the iconic IU Assembly Hall.” The hall has bared witness to three of the five NCAA Championships won by an IU team and hosted legendary players like Isiah Thomas and Scott May. In 1976, May was voted college player of the year after leading his team to an undefeated season, a record that has not been broken to this day. With these facts in mind, it’s no wonder these turnstiles are in high demand as many who passed through them were able to witness history in the making. Each turnstile is being auctioned separately, so if you miss one, you will the opportunity to bid on another. A new turnstile will be auctioned off every three to five days until all of them are gone. To date, there have been eight turnstiles sold at prices ranging from $860 to $2,281, with fourteen more turnstiles to be sold. Indiana University has a retail sales floor where many surplus items can be purchased. However, the university uses GovDeals.com to auction their more unique and interesting property due to the increased exposure to their assets and broader bidder base GovDeals.com offers.
