Cats are obligate carnivores which means their nutritional needs can only be met through the consumption of animal-based diets.  Through the centuries, cats developed differently from other pet species, resulting in some unique characteristics and special nutritional needs.  The parts of their gastrointestinal system (stomach and colon) focused on processing vegetable matter are smaller and lack the salivary enzyme amylase so they have a limited ability to deal with carbohydrates.
