NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. - March 14, 2016 - PRLog -- Today, NavyCrow.com The Premier Navy Pride apparel and memorabilia company announced that they have completed their latest challenge coin designed to honor the Boatswain's Mates of the Fleet.

Bosun Pipe All Hands on Deck!

Since the Boatswain's Mate rating pre-dates the Continental Navy something special was called for to properly honor these Sailors. The Boatswain's Mates (pronounced Bosun) are so unique that they don't even have an "A" School, rather Sailors out of Navy Bootcamp attend Seaman Apprenticeship Training in Great Lakes before headed out to the Fleet such as how Sailors experienced life in the Naval Service for the better part of two centuries.

The word boatswain has been around in one form or another longer than Modern English has (Modern English only dates back to the beginning of the Renaissance) ] It is derived from late Old English batswegen, from bat ("boat") + Old Norse sveinn ("swain"), meaning a young man, a follower, retainer or servant.Various phonetic spellings (such as "bosun" and "Bos'n") have also been in use through the centuries.

Originally, on board sailing ships the Boatswain was in charge of a ship's anchors, cordage, colors, deck crew and the ship's boats. The Boatswain would also be in charge of the rigging while the ship was in dock. The Boatswain's technical tasks have been modernized with the advent of steam engines and subsequent mechanisation

United States Naval slang terminology which describes those sailors in the Fleet who work on the ship and who maintain the ship and it's spaces that relate primarily to the Anchor Room (Foc'sle), gangways, ceremonial spaces, main decks, flight decks and top decks. The duty of the Deck Ape is often demanding, difficult and sometimes grueling compared to most work standards. Deck Apes are a very proud sort of Sailor that work hard, play hard and love the traditional Naval standards to which they uphold.

The design features a large angry ape wearing a Dixie Cup Sailors cap presumably voicing his opinion at someone whom crossed his path! He carries the ship's anchors over his shoulders symbolizing his importance to the ship, the Crossed Anchors on his right forearm are for when he goes on shore and rolls up his sleeves to reveal true liberty cuffs and tattoos of a Sailor. Our Bosun is surrounded by the anchor chain with the name "DECK APE" prominently displayed on a banner beneath him lest anyone mistake him for a Snipe!
