Auto repair-related environmental impacts have been remediated by the City and MDEQ. The site became contaminated from historical automotive activities and underground storage tanks (USTs). In 2002, 12 USTs and approximately 700 cubic yards of impacted soil were removed under a Clean Michigan Initiative (CMI) Grant. In 2008 - 2009, the City of Detroit conducted remedial activities, including soil and debris excavation, disposal of excavated materials, sampling, backfilling and construction of a berm to create a clean site for commercial/mixed- Now remediated, this site is listed at BrownfieldListings.com as a greyfield. View at: https://brownfieldlistings.com/ Former Detroit Coke - 7819 West Jefferson Ave. Allied Chemical Corporation, Semet-Solvay Division, and Allied Signal operated coke plants at this site until 1991. Coking operations were shut down, and the RCRA corrective action process was initiated. An Administrative Order by Consent was issued to Honeywell International Inc. by MDEQ in 1999. Honeywell is currently conducting remedial investigation and remedial action. Today, one third of the property is owned by the City and under redevelopment, while the remaining two thirds of the 120-acre site is owned and operated by private entities. The current users include Lafarge North America Inc, McCoig Holding, Detroit-Windsor Truck Ferry, and Delray Connecting Railroad. This property is located in a Renaissance Zone. MDEQ conducted an environmental assessment in 2004. A time critical removal action was conducted by USEPA in 2008 to remove and dispose of drums and other containers with hazardous materials, hazardous materials inside tanks and sumps, PCB-impacted materials, and solid debris contaminated with asbestos. In 2010, MDEQ conducted a remedial action to remove underground storage tanks and contaminated soils. Over $1,000,000 has been spent to conduct remedial action at the site, and an estimated $300,000 in additional remedial actions may be required.
