MIDDLEBURY, Conn. - April 4, 2016 - PRLog -- - A local teen afflicted with primary immunodeficiency disorder (PI) hopes a friendly fight with draw awareness to PI and at the same time - perhaps - set a world record.

Pomperaug High School junior Madison Shaw founded Maddie's Herd four years ago to spread awareness, raise funds and improve the lives of those living with PI disorders.

On Saturday, May 14, Maddie's Herd will host Pie For PI, a shaving cream pie fight in which Madison hopes to raise $25,000 and set a Guinness World Record (GWR).

The fundraiser, to be staged in the great lawn area at Quassy Amusement & Waterpark here, will support the Immune Deficiency Foundation, of which the local student has already raised $30,000 through various efforts.

Pre-registration for the pie fight is $10 with $15 charged the day of the event.

"This is a personal passion inspired by coping with a rare disease. I've had the honor of meeting two other local teens who are struggling similarly, so maybe by raising awareness we will learn that we're not as uncommon as once believed. With enough zeal, we can create change in the lives of those living with PI and have a little messy fun doing it. We're calling all PI-fighters!" Madison said.

Eye On The Record

Maddie's Herd has a target of 1,400 participants in the friendly skirmish in hopes of breaking the world record. According to GWR, the current mark for the largest shaving cream pie fight was set on June 20 of last year. The event involved 869 participants and was achieved by Belfast Community Circus School at the Big Fun Flan Fling event in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The participants managed to throw 2,574 shaving cream pies during the event.

Among those expected to participate in the Pie For PI fundraiser include staff members from the Region 15 school district, community leaders and Miss Connecticut Colleen Ward.

Madison said she has a personal goal of raising $50,000 for the Immune Deficiency Foundation before graduating from high school.

Maddie's Herd is committed to working with organizations dedicated to creating positive change in the lives of families living with challenging health circumstances, especially primary immunodeficiency disorders.

Those wanting to register may do so at https://www.crowdrise.com/PieFight4PI. Day-of registration and packet pick up will be held at Quassy 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with the first pie to be thrown at 2:30 p.m. For more information contact Madison Shaw at 203-267-4333 or at MaddiesHerd@gmail.com.

About The Foundation

The Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF), founded in 1980, is the national non-profit patient organization dedicated to improving the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of persons with PI through advocacy, education and research. There are approximately 250,000 people who are diagnosed with PI in the U.S., and thousands more go undetected.

IDF does not charge patients or healthcare professionals for the educational materials or local programming that it provides. This is possible because of the generosity of the donors and sponsors who make unrestricted gifts to IDF. For more information visit http://primaryimmune.org/.
