A Tribute to Phil Woods

with Greg Abate and Richie Cole at Scullers Jazz Club

Thursday April 28, a TRIBUTE TO PHIL WOODS with Greg Abate and Richie Colefor the recent cd Kindred Spirits Live at Chan's. There will be two options for tickets, either dinner and show or just the show. The show starts at 8:00p at Scullers Jazz Club, 400 Soldiers Field Rd at the Doubletree Suites by Hilton Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts.

The two saxophonists come together on this very special evening to honor alto saxophone legend Phil Woods. Composer, mentor, bandleader Phil Woods won 4 GRAMMY AWARDS. In 2007 he was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and received a Living Jazz Legend Award from the Kennedy Center.

Grammy-nominated saxophonist Greg Abate has over 17 recordings as a leader and is one of the busiest saxophonists in New England, performing at jazz clubs and festivals in the U.S. and internationally. Allaboutjazz.com reviewer Dan McClenaghan had this to say about Kindred Spirits:

"The legendary alto saxophonist Phil Woods' (1931-2015) health was failing at the time Kindred Spirits: Live at Chan's was recorded, but you never know it by listening to the crisp delivery, the vitality of a hot bebop band playing in the mode of the iconic altoist Charlie Parker."

Saxophonist Richie Cole is the perfect choice to share the stage with Abate for this engagement at Scullers. Cole's jazz roots run deep in bebop and he has a real fire to his playing. Cole received a DownBeat scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, but left after 2 years to play with The Buddy Rich Big Band and has performed with vocalist Eddie Jefferson, Freddie Hubbard, Lionel Hampton and many others, in addition to recording and performing under his own name and with his group, "Alto Madness."

Cole was also featured on Abate's 2008 recording, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

I sleep a lot better knowing there are alto players like Greg! It was a joy to make music with him and he writes good songs that are challenging." Phil Woods
