By: Quality of Life Care, LLC My viewpoint on this is from the perspective of one who has witnessed first hand the beauty and the limitations of hospice, the way palliative care is still struggling to be known in the health care world prior to hospice entry and what I've seen in the "alternative death empowerment" It used to be that when people heard of others doing end of life doula or midwife service or training, it was with curiousity and appreciation. That is still the case for the most part. And there is a growing concern about the motives of people training others in what they know. And, I do want everyone to know that end of life doulas and midwives and companions are adjuncts to hospice service, THEY DO NOT REPLACE IT. We are companioning families and offering supportive presence during a time when most people would love more support. We are additional support. Hospice leads the care team; doulas are an extra pair of loving hands and presence. They may offer other skills as well, but they are not taking the place of hospice, ever.
