Follow on Google News | Tired of tiles? Degafloor has the answerBy: Degafloor Ltd Today's leading restaurant and catering groups are striving to achieve outstanding cleanliness standards and food hygiene ratings. This means that floors must be joint free, hard-wearing and easy to clean. Employee safety is also paramount, so highly slip resistant floors are essential. These changing needs have led many to review the options available and there is now a strong trend towards the specification of resin flooring. Having been the mainstay flooring choice for the food processing industry for decades, resin flooring is ideal for kitchen use and overcomes all of the main failings of tiles. However, when selecting resins there are still key pitfalls that specifiers need to consider and avoid. Resin flooring is available in grades that offer excellent levels of slip resistance. The level though will differ in dry, wet and contaminated conditions. The correct choice must be a floor that offers good slip resistance (i.e. a pendulum test value to BS7976 of 36+) at the extremes of operating conditions. Inevitably, achieving the correct level of slip resistance is likely to mean a textured finish, but what impact will this have on cleaning? In simple terms, a textured floor cannot be effectively cleaned with a mop and bucket. A more robust regime is required, typically one that employs deck scrubbing or a rotary brush cleaning machine. Whilst this sounds onerous, the use of a good quality degreaser coupled with the correct equipment allows for fast and highly effective cleaning. Resin flooring is incredibly tough. However, it is not a 'fix all' solution and, as with other flooring solutions, a sound substrate will still be required in order for longevity to be delivered. Thus cementitious screeds and concrete need to be largely crack free (although most resin flooring suppliers also offer good quality crack reinforcing / stabilising solutions) and of a suitable strength, ply floors need to be of the correct grade and installed to a high standard (e.g. correct grade and length of screws, correct board spacing, suitably strong joist structure etc) and tiles need to be largely crack free and well bonded. There is no doubt that a correctly specified, properly installed and well maintained resin floor will provide unrivalled performance and unparalleled lifetime value, but if you don't avoid the pitfalls you may well end up disappointed!
