Clinical NeuroScience Doctors go Abroad

Drs. Matthew Antonucci and Derek Barton of Plasticity Brain Centers headed to France for patient assessments

ORLANDO, Fla. - April 28, 2016 - PRLog -- With the recent rise of awareness of concussions, brain injury, and brain health, Plasticity Brain Centers teamed up with Swiss companies "Test My Brain" and Athletica to conduct a weeklong event in which individuals from France, Switzerland, and neighboring countries were able to gain access to cutting edge brain testing and examination.

Over a dozen individuals, including amateur and professional athletes, traveled to Saint-Genis-Pouilly, France from April 1 to 6, 2016 to receive a 3-hour comprehensive brain evaluation performed by Plasticity Brain Centers doctors, Dr. Matthew Antonucci and Dr. Derek Barton, as well as the director of Athletica, Dr. Michael Golay. This assessment consisted of a comprehensive medical examination, orthostatic testing (looking at heart function with individuals in lying, seated, and standing positions), computerized balance assessment, computerized eye tracking assessment (video oculography), vestibular evaluation, vision tests, and a neurocognitive/ concussion assessment utilizing portable, cutting-edge technology produced by the Cleveland Clinic called "C3Logix".

"I've had debilitating migraines for almost a decade", said one individual. "They were so bad that one time I literally was hitting my head against the wall hoping that it would help. It's not logical, I know, but when you're in that much pain and nothing else works, you will try anything."

"This was the first time that any doctor could tell me why I was having my symptoms", said another individual. "Everyone says there is nothing wrong with me and I should feel fine, but I don't. I'm so happy that I finally have some answers and a plan to get well."

Individuals with conditions such as concussion, movement disorders, migraines, balance issues, dementia, vertigo, anxiety, and cognitive challenges traveled as far as 1000 km to have this assessment performed. Three individuals sought the assessment only to see if their brain was healthy.

"While some of the equipment that we use may be cutting-edge, the testing that we perform has been utilized for decades. We just pull it all together, like puzzle pieces, to help people understand how their brain is performing", says Dr. Antonucci.

While no treatment was performed during this week, patients were advised on lifestyle modifications that they could make in an effort to improve their brain function, and were referred to trained brain rehabilitation specialists to help them with their conditions.

"One of the best things about these tests is that the results are like fingerprints; every person's is unique, and shouldn't change unless something good or bad happens to the brain. So they serve as a great diagnostic tool as well as a neurological baseline," says Dr. Barton.

Test My Brain is a Swiss company that was formed to make the functional brain assessment and treatment that has been offered by Plasticity Brain Centers and Carrick Institute trained doctors in the United States for decades. Test My Brain engages elite neurological specialists from around the world, to perform assessments and week-long intensive brain rehabilitation protocols similar to those shown to be successful at Plasticity Brain Centers in Orlando, Florida. Both Drs. Antonucci and Barton work at Plasticity Brain Centers in Orlando.
