Honda Expands Clarity Fuel Cell Lineup with EV and HybridHonda announced plans to expand the hydrogen-powered Clarity with electric and plug-in hybrid versions, coming to the Albany area in 2017.
John Mendel spoke to Honda's expansion of the Clarity, saying, "The Honda Clarity Series will provide customers with a well-equipped, premium, midsize vehicle with a range of ultra low-carbon powertrain options to suit their lifestyle needs." The fuel cell version of the Honda Clarity is still in very limited production due to the small number of hydrogen fuel stations in the country, so Honda aims to have the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid available in all 50 states by the end of 2017. The Clarity EV will land somewhere in the middle, expanding beyond the market of the Clarity Fuel Cell but not quite carrying the reach of the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid. Honda has announced that the Clarity Electric will be the first vehicle of its kind; while electric cars have existed in the past (including Honda's very own Fit EV), the Clarity Electric will be the first five-passenger electric vehicle to offer premium content and features. The range for Honda's new EV has yet to be announced, but based on the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid's impressive electric-only range, it could lead the market. Albany drivers seeking an alternative since the Accord Plug-in Hybrid ceased production will have it soon with the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid. The full engine specs have yet to be released, but recent innovations have allowed Honda's plug-in hybrid engines to attain all-electric driving ranges of 40 miles.
