Follow on Google News | Bodybuilding in your 70's: What can your grandfather do?Three men in their 70's and 80's, all vying for the champion spot in the World Bodybuilding Championship next year, do more than many men half their age.
Roger Thomas, at 73 yrs, is the novice among his rivals. He came in third in the British Natural Bodybuilding Championship in 2012, but has the least experience competing. He's hoping to upsweep the competition and beat out both the current champion, Eric Dower, age 79 and the previous champion, Jimmy Bennie, age 73. Roger only started weightlifting after he turned 68 yrs. old and does it mostly for fun. He trains five days a week and takes the other two days off by practicing Kung Fu. The medals that have followed his competitions are "just icing on the cake" for Roger. With only five years of bodybuilding, Roger has proven an inspiration for everyone who wants to accomplish something, but started late. Jimmy Bennie, held the world bodybuilding championship until last year when Eric Dower became the reigning champion. A role model, Jim started bodybuilding at 70 and started winning championships only two years later. He has had to fight his health and natural aging of his body. Jim suffered a double heart attack while working out at the gym. Luckily, he made it to the hospital with only minutes to spare and went back to the gym as soon as he was allowed by doctors. "I'm actually fighting nature to achieve the body that I really want and I think I've pushed my body to the maximum." Jim stated two years ago. He still believes in pushing himself and is training even harder for the championship to retake his title. He is determined to wade and forge through any physical and health hurdles that he has to in order to overtake Eric next year. But Eric Dower, the oldest bodybuilder of the three, is just as determined to maintain his championship title. Eric Dower has been weightlifting longer than Jim or Roger and has 6 years of age over them. He proves that a lifetime of healthy living and fitness will continue to reap benefits. We would expect to see Eric competing well into his 80's. He shows no signs of slowing down. Eric turns 80 soon and will be nearly 81 when he competes next year. Fitness and health have always been important to Eric, who has never used steroids and eats a diet low in fat, salt and sugar. "I've never taken steroids and I am a keen promoter of an all-natural lifestyle and a keen supporter of the Natural Body Building Federation." We'll have to wait another year before we can see the results of this friendly rivalry. Meanwhile, Eric, Jim and Roger have paved a path that can inspire millions who suffer from the physical limitations associated with aging. These men have proven that age is largely a matter of the mind. Weightlifting and other forms of physical exercise have proven to ward off many of those affects and keeping the body younger and healthier.
