ABB to showcase the Internet of Things, Services and People at Automatica 2016

Collaboration of people and robots as well as the omnipresent trend to digitalization are reshaping the manufacturing landscape. At Automatica ABB is presenting essential building blocks of the factory of the future.

MUNICH - June 21, 2016 - PRLog -- ABB will present innovative solutions at Automatica, the international trade show for automation and mechatronics taking place in Munich, Germany from June 21 to 24. The solutions can help manufacturers to unlock the benefits of ABB's concept of the Internet of Things, Services and People (IoTSP), increasing productivity, flexibility and efficiency along the manufacturing value chain.

As manufacturing moves from mass production to mass customization the flexibility to efficiently change and adapt production becomes critical. This requires increased collaboration between people and robots, between islands of automation and even between production sites. As well as collaboration digitalization is another hallmark of the factory of the future, where actionable information drives better decisions and operations from engineering and commissioning to running and maintaining production.

"Many manufacturers understand the importance of embracing these emerging technologies, however adoption can be challenging," said Sami Atiya, President of ABB's Discrete Automation and Motion division. "In line with ABB's Next Level Strategy, ABB is helping its customers manage this transition towards the factory of the future while building their competitive edge for efficiency, reliability and market agility."

New collaborative solutions like SafeMove2, an advanced safety-certified monitoring and control software solution will allow people and robots to safely work closer together without compromising productivity in a variety of applications. SafeMove2 will be presented at Automatica alongside YuMi®, the world's first truly collaborative robot, which is simulating a real-world collaborative assembly application from ABB's own low-voltage electronics factory in Finland.

A prime example of the trend towards digitalization is ABB's new smart sensor technology, which turns low-voltage motors - which previously had to be manually maintained - into intelligent machines that inform users in advance of service needs. This can reduce downtime by up to 70 percent and extend motor lifetimes by up to 30 percent, as well as reducing energy consumption by as much as 10 percent.

ABB is also introducing a new Connected Services platform for robots that can prevent up to 25 percent of incidents and speed response times and issue resolution by up to 60 percent. Connected Services are part of the ongoing evolution of the Remote Services for robots ABB introduced almost 10 years ago and reflect the benefits of integrating over 5,000 robots today into the IoTSP ecosystem.

With people and robots working together in the factory of the future, safety becomes a critical issue, and ABB's extensive and innovative Smart Safety products will be exhibited at the show.

ABB will present a number of collaboration and digitalization solutions at stand 320, hall B5 at Automatica, June 21-24 that will help bring the potential of IoTSP to life.
