By: Asheville Signarama Learning more about why honey bee colonies started dying in 2007, later dubbed "Colony Collapse Disorder," beekeepers and non-beekeepers alike became very concerned. Understanding that one in every three bites of food we eat is courtesy of insect pollination, Stiles was one of these very concerned beekeepers. Equally important, three-quarters of all plant species rely on pollinators for the survival of their species. While less is known about native bees and other pollinators, we do know that entire species are disappearing at alarming rates as they battle most of the same enemies as honey bees--loss of habitat essential for food and shelter, inappropriate pesticide use, diseases, and parasites. To help in the fight to preserve our environment and the pollinators who are a vital component not only in the environment but also in our food chain, Stiles conceived Bee City USA, as a set of commitments incorporated communities voluntarily make to ensure their pollinators are kept safe and their ongoing preservation is a priority. On June 26th, 2012, Asheville, North Carolina, became the inaugural Bee City USA affiliate in America. Bee City USA continues to grow and now there are 26 Bee Cities in 15 states; including Ann Arbor MI, Seattle, WA, and Washington D.C. Bee City USA promotes pollinator consciousness at the same priority level as clean water, road conditions, and recycling, etc. So the question posed from all of this is, how do we let people know about how important pollinators are to our planet's resilience and what each of can do to help them? Recognizing that busy people respond to signs and visual imagery, Bee City USA needs lots of high quality, attractive printed products and signs. Says Stiles, "We needed to work with a company that would support our vision and growth every step of the way. Working with Arlene & Ed Sullivan is wonderful. They have become our official Bee City USA signage and print company. They help us maintain our brand identity and can handle all of our volume needs. Their service and quality is great. They guarantee that we will be happy with the products they develop and have proven this time and again. They're an absolute delight to work with. Signarama is even sharing a portion of the profits with Bee City USA for anything our affiliates have printed through them. We encourage affiliates to buy logo items like garden signs, static cling decals, and bumper stickers in bulk and sell them locally at a profit to raise funds for their programs." About Bee City, USA Bee City USA certification is both an honor and a responsibility. The program encourages city and county leaders across the nation to explore joining the Bee City USA movement by completing the application process and adopting the resolution. As communities across America become attuned to the universe of creatures that make the planet bloom and fruit, we will become more conscientious about what we plant and how we maintain our green spaces. There is much we can teach one another--both city to city and species to species.
