By: Orthopedic Associates of Middletown, CT "OAM is excited to add a new surgeon with unique capabilities who is dedicated to the patient experience. Dr. Kuhn will provide surgical and non-surgical intervention in a personable, patient focused environment. His addition to our surgical team will help provide the best care to our patients and community" says Daniel Neal, Practice Administrator. In athletic competition, as in both military service and politics, high functionality and endurance are two of the most important requisites for a job well done. For more than a dozen years, that's precisely what Dr. Michael Kuhn, the newest member of OAM, used his skills to achieve: to return functionality and endurance to soldiers, sailors, high ranking officials, senators and other Washington government personnel. Born and raised in southeastern Pennsylvania, Dr. Kuhn attended the United States Naval Academy and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. After completing his orthopedic surgery residency in Bethesda, he received an Orthopedic Sports Medicine fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. Dr. Kuhn also served as assistant team physician for the Boston Celtics and provided medical care for the athletic program at Northeastern University and the United States Naval Academy. Dr. Kuhn, whose areas of expertise include orthopedic surgery, arthroscopy, cartilage restoration, meniscal transplantation and other specialties, brings his reputation for cutting- edge technologies and patient-focused care to Orthopedic Associates of Middletown (OAM). A veteran military physician, Dr. Kuhn's focus at OAM will be on sports medicine, workers' comp and active lifestyleinjuries. "I derive an enormous amount of personal and professional satisfaction helping to improve the quality of life for each patient," says Dr. Kuhn, whose military career—where he received the rank of Commander—forged his specialty in arthroscopic reconstructive surgery. "OAM shares my philosophy of caring for every patient as if each one is a family member, and that's what convinces me that my decision to join forces with them is a logical progression of my career." In addition to arthroscopic surgery on shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and ankles, Dr. Kuhn's other specialties include rotator cuff repair, fracture care, ankle overuse injuries and other procedures that are of particular value to athletes and people who have very active lifestyles. Among other acknowledgements, he is distinguished among his peers for the cutting-edge techniques he uses with plasma and bone marrow to decrease pain, improve function, and delay or eliminate surgical interventions. Dr. Kuhn says that research continually yields advances in techniques and technologies, including better replacement parts, but that his own goal is to avoid replacement surgery whenever possible, choosing instead to repair and improve what has been damaged or compromised. "I strive with each and every patient to achieve the highest level of function with the least invasive techniques to accomplish the mission at hand," he says. High functionality and endurance are also accurate descriptions of Dr. Kuhn's personal activities, an active marathoner who recently completed his tenth long-distance race, Dr. Kuhn is involved in many outdoor activities that give him even greater insights into the issues with which he will treat each day at OAM.
