Ivey Engineering Consultant Certifies as Carbon Monoxide & Combustion AnalystVaczek's training will enhance the firm's CO expert witness services
The advanced HVAC training course, sponsored by National Comfort Institute (NCI), included seminars on carbon-monoxide safety testing, combustion performance and diagnostics. Vaczek was required to pass a written exam at the end of the 3-day certification course. Carbon monoxide, often referred to as a "silent killer," is responsible for more than 400 deaths each year in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Furthermore, the CDC has seen more than 4,000 Americans hospitalized each year for accidental CO poisoning. "Carbon monoxide is generated as a normal result of boiler and heater operation," explains Vaczek. Since CO is odorless, colorless and has no taste, it can usually go undetected, even at low or moderate levels. According to Vaczek, the key to CO safety is keeping carbon-monoxide levels to a minimum by maintaining proper CO combustion and flue venting. "Carbon monoxide is a silent menace," he says. "If a building's boiler or furnace is not allowed to function properly, dangerous carbon monoxide levels can occur in the building. When this happens, lives are at risk." "A certified carbon monoxide and combustion expert understands all of the many elements that go into appliance and building operation," says Vaczek. "Having such an expert on the job means that all possible contributors to hazardous conditions will be assessed and analyzed." Besides his recent CO certification, Vaczek is also a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and holds a Certified Plumbing Design (CPD) designation. As a senior consultant at IEI, his responsibilities include forensic analysis of HVAC, plumbing and energy-management systems. "Having a formally trained and certified CO and combustion analyst on staff was of high importance," Vaczek will be required to keep up on his training by taking continuing education credits. "Certified analysts undergo continuing educational training and attend seminars on a regular basis," adds Vaczek. "This assures that the credentials and required analysis techniques are maintained at the most active level." To read a more detailed bio on Vaczek, please visit his online profile.
