By: Gallery1 Summary Patrick Kelly attended Jackson State University and a native of Vicksburg, MS. He was one of the first African-Americans designers whose designs graced the covers of Vogue and draped the bodies of fashion icons Iman, Naomi Campbell, Bette Davis, Princess Diana, Grace Jones, and Madonna, just to name a few. He was not only a native from Vicksburg, MS but also JSU alum. From September 29, 2016 through October 31 Mississippi will celebrate the fashion legend at Gallery1, here on the campus of Jackson State University. Gallery1 Director, Shon McCarthy says she was inspired by Patrick Kelly, because she was also a designer in New York and when she started her tenure at Jackson State recognized that there was a need for an archival presence of Patrick Kelly here, in order to inspire, expose, and educate the JSU students and the community of our fashion legend. Opening day will consist of a presentation of 25 of Patrick Kelly's original collection, gifted by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the owners of his estate. A photo exhibition by Imani Khayyam and a Fashion Show, with inspirational pieces designed by Kami Grim. Patrick Kelly also created T-shirts, and designer Zach Thomas has designed the T-Shirts for the exhibition. Seven middles school students from the Jackson and surrounding area will design the accessories. It is certainly a collaborative effort of artists and students from many generations. The mission is to continue Patrick Kelly's motto to "Make you smile". References http://www.jsums.edu/ End
