Follow on Google News | When "The Johnald" Becomes "The Donald"The 'John Di Domenico' Effect: Making Donald Trump a Likeable Character
By: John Di Domenico Few 'know' Donald Trump in the way that Di Domenico does – inflection, characteristics – both verbal and non-verbal, and, even, perceived motivation. When you set out to 'become' another person, nothing about their public persona goes untapped or is off-limits. Every nuance, every small detail is studied – because Di Domenico is an actor, not a doppelganger. Di Domenico has about 30 personalities in his repertoire, but it's his Trump impression that has had him on nearly 50 TV appearances and more than another 50 print articles and radio interviews in the last year. The actor even has international appeal - from South Africa to England, Canada and Australia, John has done live via-satellite interviews internationally and throughout the U.S. as well as when on tour. Featured on NBC News, CNN Money, Inside Edition, USA Today and an upcoming ABC Nightline piece, Di Domenico seems to have a comic charm and resiliency that make him irresistible to even the staunchest Trump detractor. Taping recently in New York for a news feature, "The Johnald," as Di Domenico calls himself, was thronged by people on 5th and Park Avenue – even security at Trump Tower chuckled at the impersonator with his signature red tie, perfectly winged hair and signature "orange" tan as he made his way through the lobby. "It's has been absolutely incredible. I feel like Rocky," says Di Domenico. "I've been an actor for 30 years and I'm finally getting my shot at the title." Making "The Donald" even more real is Di Domenico's work ethic and his commitment to practicing the impersonation every day while reviewing the prior day's Trump rallies, appearances and interviews to fine tune the impression as it evolves over time. It takes Di Domenico over an hour to transform into "The Donald." An investment in three $4,000 human hair wigs, more expensive, high-thread count shirts and just the right shade of suntan orange helps bring home the character. But there's more to this actor's process in how he has captured the essence of Donald Trump – and one that resonates with his audience and when he's in public. "Trump is such a great character to impersonate. I try to focus on the comedy of the character and warm up his persona so he can be enjoyed by everyone in the audience," says Di Domenico. "I walk a fine comedic line. I don't want to alienate anyone. As with all my performances I want to entertain the entire audience." John Di Domenico's work includes voiceovers, commercials, events, toys, games, virtual reality, animated and web series feature films and TV. He is one of the busiest corporate entertainers in the U.S. His Austin Powers – enjoyed by the real Donald Trump at his 55th birthday – has been recognized as the best by People magazine. # # # Di Domenico is currently the voice of Donald Trump for Slate's Trumpcast and is on tour for private events while working on a film project.
