GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, Ecuador - Oct. 11, 2016 - PRLog -- There are many destinations around the world that attract scuba divers who enjoy diving from dive liveaboards. One of the top remote destinations in the world is the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. The Galapagos Islands have intrigue mankind since it was first discovered. An archipelago – mostly barren – stands alone when it comes to unique destinations. One of the factors is the unique weather and water conditions around the islands. Three different major ocean currents converge on the islands. This brings marine life from different climate zones. The islands are famed for their vast number of endemic species and were studied by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. His observations and collections contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.

Galapagos Islands are located 604 miles (972 km) from the South American continent. Española Island, the southernmost islet of the archipelago is in the southern hemisphere, and Darwin Island, the northernmost island is in the northern hemisphere, between them is a distance of 420 km (265 mi). The Galápagos Archipelago consists of 7,880 km2 (3,040 sq mi) of land spread over 45,000 km2 (17,000 sq mi) of ocean.

The islands are well known as a destination for bird watchers, other naturalist and scuba divers. The biggest attractions for most Scuba Divers is the vast marine life, there are over 400 species of fish of which 17% are only found in the Galapagos Islands. Hundreds of pelagic fish can be found on most dive sites. The dive sites in the far north around Darwin island have a bio-mass that is the highest in the world. Mostly made up of the different species of sharks and whales that visit there. Ten times higher than the famous Great Barrier Reef.

The Galapagos National Park contains 97% of the land mass of the island chain and all waters out to 40 miles from shore. Other than park rangers, no one lives within the national park and all visitors must be escorted by a license guide.

"probably one of the most spectacular and significant marine ecosystems that we have on the planet". Pelayo Salinas de León, a senior marine scientist with the Charles Darwin Foundation talking about the Galapagos National Park.
