With the help of the FHLU board, committee and producer, we selected powerful individuals who display the true essence of our mission which they expressed, encouraged and inspired all in attendance," With a beautiful panoramic view of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop, our honorees and celebrity guests flocked to the media-filled fuchsia carpet, honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month, followed by the invocation from Reverend Stanley White of Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Ervin Pope and the FURNACE band set the tone of the event with their instrumental renditions of familiar gospel, jazz and soulful covers while guests dined on a delicious breakfast buffet of American fare, delightful pastries, and a waffle station. Keeping with the theme "Trusting and believing in yourself", honoree Harold Williams passionately spoke about his commitment to his FAITH. Lastly, honoree Kevon Gulley boldly stated his stance on saving black boys nationwide and "leaving a legacy of 5000" to continue his work with SAVE BLACK BOYS. High School Senior Evelyn Boswell amazed the audience with a dynamic spoken word performance. Our profound and inspirational speaker, Henry Acosta, roused the guests with his personal and deep-rooted story as an uneducated young man who graduated from high school, pursued higher education and now has a Ph.D. all while suffering in silence with mental illness & depression.
