"Our goal is to bring the community together celebrate Red Rock and raise awareness of Save Red Rock's mission of preserving and protecting land surrounding RRNCA," said Heather Fisher, SRR president and co-owner of Las Vegas Cyclery. "We want to capture 50,000 signatures on our Keep Red Rock Rural petition before the Clark County Commissioners vote on the issue."

SRR's petition has over 23,000 signatures from people around the world. The public is invited to show support of SRR by signing the petition at www.saveredrock.com.

Gypsum Resources, LLC (Gypsum) proposed a 2,010.6-acre development to be built on Blue Diamond Hill, located directly south of the RRCNCA Visitor's Center and overlooking the 13-mile campground and Southwest Ridge Recreation Area.

Gypsum purchased the rural land in 2002 and in 2011 sought approval for high-density zoning from Clark County Commissioners. After the plan was put on hold the developer tried to come to a land swap agreement with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Despite support by all levels of government for the land transfer, negotiations fell though. As a result, the developer is once again seeking approval to have the land rezoned for high-density development.

During a meeting on October 18, the Clark County Planning Commission voted unanimously to

deny Gypsum's reinstated proposal for a high-density development after listening to plans

presented by a representative of Gypsum and comments made by supporters of SRR, including Mountain's Edge HOA President Mark Leon who went on record stating that 91 percent of Mountain's Edge residents surveyed opposed the project due to traffic concerns.

The Gypsum project proposes a road engineered to accommodate over 44,000 car trips per day from the development to Blue Diamond Road (State Route 160). There are no plans, however, to improve traffic access to the 215 Beltway via Blue Diamond and Fort Apache Roads, Durango and Buffalo Drives, and Rainbow Boulevard, with the heaviest impact affecting the Mountain's Edge community and Pahrump commuters.

If Commissioners vote to rezone land that's currently deemed rural, SRR believes the high-density development will not only increase traffic but decrease safety of outdoor enthusiasts, bring light and air pollution to the area, increase water costs for all Las Vegas Valley residents and forever destroy Red Rock's landscape, impacting the natural experience for the locals and tourists that visit RRCNCA each year.
