Pledges to raise $25,000 for the Veteran's Transitional House Waterloo, IA November 18, 2016 – Americans for Independent Living, a non-profit in Waterloo, IA, has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. AFIL pledges to raise $25,000 for the Veteran's Transitional House in Waterloo, IA. Occurring this year on November 29, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support. In 2015, the fourth year of the movement, #GivingTuesday broughttogether over 45,000 partners in 71 countries and helped raise nearly $117 Million online in the US alone. With the generous donation of a home in Waterloo, IA, we are currently renovating and will open it as a transitional home for Veterans in our area. Our intention is to help the homeless veterans to have a place to stay and transition back into the community as empowered individuals. We plan to provide them with job training, health and medical care during their stay. Our hopes are to help these individuals get to a point where they can move onto other transitional housing and continue to participate in the community in a productive manner. Any donations are welcome to complete this project before winter and have these veterans in a warm and safe environment to help them succeed. "By joining the movement, #GivingTuesday we felt it is a great way of connecting individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving, " said Tim Combs, Founder/Director of Americans for Independent Living.
