Mini Implants Hold Lower Snaptite Denture in Place

Tooth loss contributes to shrinkage and bone loss in the lower jaw, and in the worst cases, can have a domino effect in which the weakening of the jaw contributes to the looseness of other teeth. Even if all the teeth have been removed, continued shrinking of the jaw around dentures can cause them to come loose. Metal implants to keep dentures in place are often too bulky to be inserted into patients' deteriorating jawbones unless patients undergo bone grafts before their teeth are reconstructed. In the past, when bone grafts were not an option, they were left with badly-fitting dentures which made them dependent on foul-smelling adhesives and which made them more vulnerable to gum disease.

However, mini implants can save patients' prosthetic lower teeth even in cases where there is little bone tissue remaining. The screws are small enough that they can be inserted without incisions, and don't require as much bone support. Depending on the case, Dr. Corsello may recommend the insertion of four to six screws into the lower jaw ridge, and drill corresponding holes into the lower denture. The underside of the denture is treated with a polymer which forms a cushion, and when it is laid over the ridge, the cushion grips the screws, holding the denture in place permanently.

With the lower denture screwed into place, patients will no longer need to remove it at night or fear that it will slip. The implants can help prevent further shrinkage, preserving the shape of the patient's face, and patients may resume a nutritious diet with confidence that they will be able to chew properly.
