Traditional veneers are thin porcelain casings that are chemically bonded to the front of patient's teeth. They are used to correct stains, chips, and discoloration, and their thickness requires that the teeth be reshaped prior to application. What that means is a dentist must grind or sand away portions of the front teeth before the veneers are affixed, in a process which requires anesthesia. Lumineers are thinner than normal veneers, so no reshaping is required. Instead, the hygienists will perform a deep cleaning, after which Dr. Dallesandro or Dr. Choi will take a mold of the patient's teeth. During the second visit, the doctor will apply a mild acid to roughen the surface of the front teeth in a process called etching. This is the same process used during the application of braces and bindings—it is perfectly safe and meant to give the teeth more grip on whatever is being attached to them. Provided that the Lumineers fit the patient's teeth properly and still allow a strong bite, the patient should be free to enjoy their new smile immediately.

Lumineers may require teeth to be reshaped if the shape itself is the cause of the patient's dissatisfaction, but they are a quick and easy way to correct most other cosmetic problems.  If necessary, Lumineers can be removed, though most issues can be avoided if they are kept clean with proper brushing and flossing, just like regular teeth.
