By: Wright Enteprises Medi-Cal Health Insurance Program Celebrates 50 Years By ANH LE Medi-Cal, the health insurance program for low income individuals and families in California, celebrated its 50th Anniversary at a special program for the community on October 25th, 2016 at San Francisco General Hospital. The Medi-Cal Celebration Program was co-sponsored by San Francisco Health Plan, Health Plan of San Mateo, and the California Department of Health Services. Key speakers at the program conveyed the important role that Medi-Cal has for over 250,000 low income, individuals, working families, children, seniors, and the disabled in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. Speakers also highlighted the importance of the Medi-Cal expansion through the Affordable Care Act that has enabled so many formerly uninsured people in San Francisco and San Mateo counties to gain health insurance. One in three Californians is enrolled in Medi-Cal. At the Celebration Program, people from the community were able to meet medical care providers, as well as sign up for Medi-Cal Health Insurance. State Senator Mark Leno, a leader in advocating for Medi-Cal Health Insurance for Californians, was one of the featured speakers. Jennifer Kent, the Director of the California Department of Health Care Services, also spoke. There was a complimentary light continental breakfast catered by "Slice of Life," a vocational skills training program for outpatient psychiatric patients at San Francisco General Hospital who are Medi-Cal members. John Grgurina, CEO and President of the San Francisco Health Plan, extended a special welcome to people who attended the Medi-Cal Celebration Program. Grgurina stated, "Medi-Cal's 50th Anniversary provides an opportunity to look back – and ahead – at the progress we have made in providing quality health care to more than 250,000 San Francisco Bay Area families. Our work is far from finished, and we must continue to protect and strengthen this program that is so critical to the health and economic security of our community. In San Francisco, that means continuing to support and partner with our key Medi-Cal providers, such as the Department of Public Health and community health centers, our enrollment assisters and community based organizations that work with us to achieve our collective goal of universal health access."
