Deputy Mayor Matthew Ryder QC To Deliver First Nelson Mandela Lecture

LONDON - Nov. 29, 2016 - PRLog -- The African Women Lawyers' Association (AWLA) is delighted to support the inaugural Nelson Mandela Human Rights Lecture.  The Annual Lecture was initiated to honour the achievements and highlight the positive contribution of Black and Minority Ethnic Lawyers in the profession.  The event is hosted by the Ethnic Minority Lawyers Division (EMLD).  The lecture will coincide with The Human rights week and in keeping with the theme Matthew Ryder will discuss key human rights and equality issues.

The first lecture will take place on Monday 5 December 2016 at the Law Society's head office in Chancery Lane, England.  Matthew Ryder QC will have the honour of delivering the lecture on human Rights. Society officials, eminent judges, solicitors and barristers will be in attendance.

The lecture will take place every year and be given by a prominent public figure.

ABOUT MATTHEW RYDER QC

Matthew Ryder QC was appointed Deputy Mayor by London Mayor Sadiq Khan in September 2016 to lead on social integration, social mobility and community engagement

Matthew is a barrister at Matrix Chambers in London, England. He specialises in complex crime and its interplay with civil law, including judicial review, police law and claims under the Human Rights Act tasked with helping to ensure 'Londoners from different faiths, ethnicities, backgrounds and social classes are better integrated' in the city.

In September 2016, Matthew was appointed deputy mayor of London to lead on social integration, social mobility and community engagement. He was also appointed a member of the panel working with David Lammy MP on the prime minister's review of 'Racial Bias and BAME representation in the criminal justice system. Matthew has a longstanding interest in social justice issues, social mobility and community issues. His work and appointments in these areas include:

• chair of the Black Cultural Archive from 2010 to 2012, a national museum which recently located to new premises, with the assistance of the Heritage Lottery Fund, in 2014
• appointment as a 'Reach National Role Model' from 2008 to 2010. Matthew was appointed one of 20 national role models of African-Caribbean heritage to discuss social issues to visit communities and discuss social mobility issues with black boys and young men across the country
• founding member of GEEMA (Group to Encourage Ethnic Minority Access) at Cambridge University 1989.
