With content generation, passion is integral in developing engaging content that provides a personal look into the owner's business. "People don't put passion into their content. They treat it as a part of their task list," Jeff says. Your website should provide content that your visitors will find valuable as opposed to a document merely listing down your company history and philosophy. "Google changed the game last November, " Alton says. "They exposed what they are looking for in websites… and that's quality content." "Content doesn't only mean articles, we're talking about videos and other forms of media," Alton adds. With videos fast becoming Google's favorite media of choice and Internet users' most consumed type of media, companies are jumping into the bandwagon by producing engaging videos that give their viewers a glimpse of what their company offers. But video isn't the only form of media to leverage. Since Google loves variety, Alton advices on utilizing infographics, PowerPoints, itemized thought pieces, how-to's, or any form of content that can help and provide value to others. After content generation, distribution is the next hurdle business owners face. With so many online channels available for promoting your business, owners become pre-inundated with fear about where to begin and end up not acting at all. "First, identify the channel," Alton advises. "Then think, 'Does that really house my audience? And which of those channels are worth spending your time in?" Jeff also tells business owners that online channels are made for either B2B or B2C, so select a channel which is in line with your marketing goals. "If you're a B2B business, go for LinkedIn. If you're a B2C business, leverage Facebook." "The key is taking charge and full responsibility of your content," Alton says. "You can fix it if you own it. If you don't own it, you can't fix it."
