Ten Things You Should Know about Mould

Moulds have a major impact on environmental and occupational hygiene

STAFFORD, U.K. - March 9, 2017 - PRLog -- Moulds not only have the potential to cause severe health problems, but they also produce allergens. Inhaling, ingesting or touching mould or mould spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

If this wasn't enough, moulds can have a major impact on environmental and occupational hygiene if not properly controlled. Moulds have potential to carry disease and infection, which could be transferred if mould or mould spores come into contact with food products.

Therefore it is important to ensure a high level of hygiene and effectively monitor the levels of mould within food manufacturing environments.

Ten Things You Should Know about Mould

1. Mould exposure has the potential to cause many health risks, including, disease & infection, allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints.

2. It is impossible to completely eliminate mould and mould spores in an indoor environment, it is, however, possible to monitor and control them.

3. If mould is a problem in your food manufacturing facility, you must clean up the mould and eliminate sources of moisture.

4. Mould usually develops as a result of trapped moisture, reducing the potential of moisture and extracting moisture from in the indoor environment can prevent mould growth.

5. With heat and moisture comes humidity, the potential of mould developing would be significantly less if you were to lower the indoor humidity levels to 30 – 60%

6. Cleanliness and hygiene has a massive impact on mould growth, by ensuring that all wet or damp areas are kept clean and dry will reduce the potential of mould.

7. Although cleaning is said to improve hygiene, ineffective cleaning regimes can create breeding grounds for mould and bacteria. Surfaces should be dried completely after cleaning, leaving wet or damp areas can increase the possibility of mould growth.

8. Condensation is a catalyst for mould, maintaining a constant indoor air flow and steady temperature along with a good ventilation and extraction system will help to prevent condensation developing.

9. Consider mould reduction furnishing, for example, install hard floors, plastic/metal furniture instead of carpets and soft furnishings in areas where moisture is likely to be a constant issue.

10. Moulds can be found almost anywhere as long as there is moisture. They can grow on virtually any substance including wood, paper, carpet, and foods.
