Follow on Google News | Civil Air Patrol Rocket Derby and PicnicConnecticut and New York Civil Air Patrol Cadets come together for a fun filled day building and launching model rockets in Carmel, NY. By Captain Olga Simoncelli
The program consisted of building and firing rockets by the cadets of both squadrons, under close supervision of their respective Aerospace Education Officers. In addition, both cadets and seniors had the opportunity to take part in a CyberPatriot session, a National Youth Cyber Education Program, created to inspire interest among students in areas of cybersecurity, technology, engineering and other sciences. Participation in this activity counted toward the first game in The National Youth Cyber Competition (uscyberpatriot.org) The "Putnam Mustangs", as the New York squadron is known, also hosted the Danbury "Hatters" to a barbecue picnic. After lunch, the rockets flew, their parachutes opened and some were even recovered. Cadets were proud of their achievements. Cadets and senior members of both squadrons made new friends across state lines, participated in educational and social activities, had a delicious lunch and enjoyed a glorious, warm and sunny day on the beautiful grounds of Carmel's Paladin Center. Many families joined the fun as well, with younger siblings and even pooches sharing in this interesting and informative Civil Air Patrol, community function. The event was organized by Putnam County Composite Squadron Commander, Captain Elena MacDermant, and spearheaded by their Aerospace Education Officer, Major Ralph Langham. It was attended by a good number of Putnam County and Danbury cadets and seniors, including Captain Jeff Jenkins, 399th Composite Squadron Commander. The next cooperative effort on the agenda might be in Southbury, CT, where cadets would have the opportunity to fly remote-controlled airplanes. Semper Vigilans!
