Ichthus Injury Network Sponsors, "From Injury to Addiction"Ichthus Injury Network Sponsors Thought Leadership Meeting, "From Injury to Addiction, Opioid Abuse Prevention in the Injury Network."
By: Ichthus Injury Network Angelique Campen, MD, FACEP states, "Every day, more than 90 Americans die after overdosing on opioids. The misuse of and addiction to opioids—including prescription pain relievers,—is a serious national crisis that affects public health as well as social and economic welfare. The total economic burden of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement. In the late 1990s, pharmaceutical companies reassured the medical community that patients would not become addicted to prescription opioid pain relievers, and healthcare providers began to prescribe them at greater rates. This subsequently led to widespread diversion and misuse of these medications before it became clear that these medications could indeed be highly addictive. Opioid overdose rates began to increase. In 2015, more than 33,000 Americans died as a result of an opioid overdose, including prescription opioids. That same year, an estimated 2 million people in the United States suffered from substance use disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers. As seen throughout the history of medicine, science can be an important part of the solution in resolving such a public health crisis." Stated by Dr. Kent Choi of Ichthus Injury Network, "So many patients affected by the opioid crisis started taking prescription pain killers due to an automobile or work injury. The first step in the right direction is for these patients to get access to a health care practitioner that is dedicated to seeing a patient's full recovery and return to life as normal. Most patients have never had an accident before and they don't know who to trust or where to turn. We are developing a healing strategy that starts with accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan that heals the whole patient completely, not just cover up the injury with bandages and mask it with pain killers. We also believe that compassionate case management is the key to monitoring responsible administration of prescription pain killers." Speakers and Sponsors of the event agree that there has never been a more important time to discuss solutions. "Opioids are a keen short term solution for relieving pain related to surgery or when a significant injury is presented, but prescriptions have to be carefully managed and there needs to be an initiative towards educating patients on the risks associated with opioids," states Dr. Kent Choi. "From Injury to Addiction" is the first in a series of thought leadership and networking events planned by Amee Gray, creator of Social Plexxus and owner of Ms.Gray Marketing, a marketing firm in Los Angeles, set to take place throughout the state of California. The events are aimed at engaging in meaningful dialogue and sharing ideas about taming the risks and ending the opioid crisis for injured patients. "Having worked in the Injury space serving both medical and legal facilities in the PI and workers compensation industries, I have heard so many concerns and so much confusion about opioid abuse. California has not been hit as hard as other parts of the country but we have a large and diverse work force population and millions of commuters on the road every day. With so many Accidents happening here, we need to support our medical and legal advocates in helping victims return to life, drug free and productive."
