Apereo Foundation Announces the Release of uPortal 5

Responsive, Cloud-Friendly, Enterprise Portal Built by and for Higher Education
PRINCETON, N.J. - Nov. 1, 2017 - PRLog -- The Apereo Foundation, a non-profit organization which sponsors a range of open source projects and software communities serving higher education, today announced the availability of uPortal 5, the leading open source enterprise portal framework built by and for higher education institutions, K-12 schools, and research communities. uPortal 5 is the newest major version of the portal, and offers many significant improvements over previous versions. Contributors toward the release include 20 individual authors, representing eight different organizations that contributed code, documentation, and/or artwork.

"The Apereo Foundation is proud to announce the release of uPortal 5, which provides a modernized, lightweight framework with WCAG 2.0 Level AA Accessibility," said Ian Dolphin, Executive Director, Apereo Foundation. "The release of uPortal 5 marks a major milestone for the Apereo open source higher education community, and we thank all who contributed their time and effort towards the many powerful improvements and enhancements."

Several institutions are currently planning for an upgrade to uPortal 5, or are already in the process of upgrading. This release meets a variety of contemporary business challenges, through the use of new technologies for content authoring and accessibility. New features include WCAG 2.0 Level AA Accessibility; modernized build and deploy processes; cloud-friendly updates; Soffits (support for new types of content); and a reduced learning curve for easier adoption and deployment.

uPortal is one of the most widely deployed open source enterprise portal frameworks, having been adopted by hundreds of higher education institutions, K-12 schools, and research communities worldwide since its inception in 2001. Adopters deploy uPortal to provide information and services to students, staff, and faculty in a centralized location, while satisfying institutional requirements for responsiveness, usability, cost effectiveness, and ease of content authoring within individual departments.
