LONDON - Dec. 4, 2017 - PRLog -- The European Parliament has established that a common security union would ensure European security and would entail the prevention of illegal migration, terrorism and organised crime, as well as stronger cybersecurity. They have also recently voted for a new automated data system that will replace the manual stamping of passports to register name, travel document, fingerprints, facial image, as well as exit and enter information.

In line with these developments, SMi Group has announced that Professor James Ferryman, Professor of Computational Vision Computer Science at University of Reading and Project Lead for Project EU PROTECT, will be speaking at the 11th annual Border Security conference.

Speaking on Day 1 of the event, Professor Ferryman will talk more about EU PROTECT and building an advanced biometric-based person identification system for robust border checks. PROTECT aims to research and prototype additional biometric modalities and methods of application for European border control, with considerations of legislative impacts, human rights and freedom to travel.

Dr Ferryman's presentation will cover:

• an update on EU PROTECT and progress made
• PROTECT scenarios and technical solutions
• Legal, social and ethical analysis of the PROTECT contactless biometric identification system
• Challenges facing the project and future timeframes

With a focus on European updates on border control strategies, Border Security 2018 will also showcase the following presentations:

• How the Italian State Police Effectively Manages Irregular Migration and Cross-Border Crime
• Securing UK Borders: Implications of Leaving the EU for Border Control
• The Portuguese Maritime Authority - Maritime Police in European Border Control Operations
• Border Control Challenges in the Wake of the Migration Crisis and 2017 Stockholm Terror Attack
• Spanish Smarter Borders Project
