By: United Premier Soccer League Based in Southern California's San Gabriel Valley, The Valley FC begins UPSL play in the Western Conference Championship Division. United Premier Soccer League Commissioner Yan Skwara said, "We continue to see new clubs join the UPSL, and we're pleased to welcome The Valley FC to the UPSL Western Conference Championship Division for the 2018 campaign. We wish President Gustavo Portillo, Jr. and The Valley FC all the best as they prepare to kick off with the Spring 2018 Season." Founded in 2018, The Valley FC is owned and operated by Gustavo Portillo, Jr., an entrepreneur in the fabrication and distribution of car detail products and industrial adhesive industries. The Valley FC President/General Manager Gustavo Portillo, Jr. said, "You can see how well-structured the league is with its connections the U.S. Amateur Cups and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. It's a great way to get started at the Pro Development level, with the UPSL's setup as a Promotion/Relegation league it's the best league for us." A native of Covina (Calif.), Portillo, Jr., 21, is a former varsity player and graduate of Covina Charter Oak High School before matriculating to Cal State Fullerton. Ty Otto, Founder and President of Oxnard Guerreros (NPSL), has an ownership stake in The Valley FC. "Ty has been my mentor and taught me a lot about what it take to get a team off the ground," Portillo, Jr., said. "He's been all for this since Day 1 and we're hoping to bring something viable to our community the way he has with his club." Albert Torres, a former collegiate player at Glendora (Calif.)'s Citrus College, will serve as the team's Head Coach. Currently the Head Athletic Trainer at Pomona's Diamond Ranch High School, Torres, 27, holds an Masters' Degree in Kinesiology from Azusa Pacific University. The club has played three preseason friendlies, including a recent win over L.A. Roma FC (UPSL), and will be hosting open tryouts at Soccer Center Pomona (2255 S. Garey Ave., Pomona, CA 91766) from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3. The Valley FC is officially supplied by Adidas, and counts Soccer Central, Goals Soccer Centers, The Upland Sports Arena and L.A. Fitness among its sponsors and/or partners. The team soon will announce its upcoming game schedule.
