Adelphi Recognizes 20 Long Island Teachers for Board Certification

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Feb. 22, 2018 - PRLog -- This month, Adelphi University honored at a campus event 20 area teachers who have successfully either become board certified or renewed their certification – with assistance from a program offered by Adephi's Ruth S. Ammon School of Education.

Certification is through the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, the gold standard of professional development for teachers. It indicates that the teachers have successfully provided evidence that they have mastered the Five Core Propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards: 1)  Teachers are committed to students and their learning; 2) Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students; 3) Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning; 4)  Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience; and 5) Teachers are members of learning communities.

"I congratulate you – I know how hard you've worked and high the standards are," said Roger Tilles, New York State Regent for the 10th Judicial District. "In Long Island, we're blessed as we really have some of the best schools in the country, not to mention the state. But we also have some really high-need schools.  And I hope as national board leaders, you will also help us and superintendents and board members understand that while we're doing great, we're not completing the job until all students on Long Island are served."

Other dignitaries who lauded the group included Adelphi interim Provost Sam L. Grogg, Adelphi interim education Dean Anne Mungai, NBCT Council of New York Director Annette Romano, and Nassau BOCES professional development Director Mitchell Goodkin.

The National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) honorees join more than 1,900 New York State teachers in their national certification.
