Lice Outbreaks Cost Estimated $280 - $325 Million

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - Feb. 25, 2018 - PRLog -- The cost of lice to school districts is enormous according to Dr. Shirley Gordon, a professor at Florida Atlantic University. Gordon states schools loose anywhere from $20 to $40 per day of funding for each day they are absent. Typically, in schools with 'no-nit policies' (students must be 100% lice and nit free), the average time missed is 4 days, which adds up to millions of dollars lost, on a national basis. It is also costly for families to take time off work, purchase treatment products, etc. to deal with their student's infestation. Most recently, schools are getting away from 'no-nit' policies, and allowing students to remain in school, unless live bugs are found on the head. There is strong support to reduce onsite school checks and eliminate no-nit policies including:

*Support by CDC, American Pediatrics Association (AAP), & National Association of School Nurses (NASN)

*Lice is often misdiagnosed (mistaken for dandruff, sand, or other type of debris).

*Students are more likely to contract lice AFTER school, with more 'head to head' contact.

*There is often shame or stigma associated with being singled out and sent home due to lice.

*Nits (eggs) are not contagious, and can be from a previous outbreak (no longer viable).

The best solution is to educate parents how to identify, prevent, and treat lice, if necessary. Lice are resistant to the most common OTC lice treatments like Rid and Nix. Non-toxic treatment such as enzyme based shampoo, or hair conditioner and a quality metal nit comb are better options.
