Adelphi Gives Back to the Community with Panther Day of Service

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - March 2, 2018 - PRLog -- About 100 students at Adelphi University will be giving back to local communities as part of Panther Day of Service on Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The day begins on the half court in Woodruff Hall at 10 a.m. with the on-campus One Million Acts of Good, which every volunteer will participate in before the off-campus service trips.

"Panther Day of Service started last spring here at Adelphi," said Jason Spradley, assistant director for the Center for Student Involvement (CSI), which organizes the project. "Many universities have a service day event, but it was our goal to have an event where the Adelphi Community could give back to the surround areas."

The "One Million Acts of Good" campaign was first started by TV personality Ellen Degeneres, who partnered with Cheerios to share stories about how people are filling the world with good. Adelphi Dining and CSI will team up to box and donate food to the Ronald McDonald House. General Mills will provide the food.

Students will then volunteer at the following nonprofits:

HorseAbility

HorseAbility's (http://horseability.org/) mission is to offer a wide range of horse-related programs to children, adults and families with special needs to promote the physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual well-being of participants. Adelphi volunteers will help manage the stables, clean the surrounding area and help groom horses.

Mommas House

Mommas House (http://www.mommashouse.org/) provides housing and support services to young mothers and their babies. Their goals are to ensure that any pregnant young woman on Long Island can have a realistic opportunity to parent their children as well as secure a job or continue their education. Volunteers will help with various activities with children or parents.

Relay for Life

Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, where team members take turns walking or running around a track or designated path for six to 24 hours, signifying that cancer never sleeps. Volunteers will solicit for Relay raffles and monetary donations for Adelphi's Relay for Life event, which will take place April 6-7.

Glory House Recovery Incorporated

Glory House Recovery Inc. (http://www.gloryhouserecovery.org/) is a homeless housing facility dedicated to helping those less fortunate among us. Volunteers will spend the day beautify the surrounding area for its residents.

A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility

Recognized nationally as a model for skilled nursing facilities, the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility (http://www.numc.edu/about/centers-of-care/a-holly-patterson-extended-care-facility/) offers innovative care in an environment that treats the whole person. The skilled and caring medical staff responds to the physical, social and emotional needs of each resident. Volunteers will engage with residents and bowl with them as well as other recreational activities.

Jackson Main Elementary School

At Jackson Main Elementary School, in the Town of Hempstead, students will spend the day helping maintain and establish a school garden.

African American Museum

The African American Museum, also known as the African American Museum of Nassau County, which opened in 1970, is dedicated to showcasing local and national African American artists. Student volunteers will be assisting in various projects.
