Is Facebook's Idea to Launch a Messaging App for Kids a Good One?

With social media sneakily snaking its way into the lives of the younger generation, the need for parental control has been significantly increased and Facebook's launch of messenger app for kids has given us a new topic to debate on.

DUBAI, UAE - March 7, 2018 - PRLog -- In December 2017, Facebook Inc, or FB rolled out an application called Messenger Kids for the children under the age of 13 years with privacy-focused parental control feature to kick aside the child-predator threats that always gloom over the Facebook's youth-focused competitor Snapchat. This newly launched app by Facebook allows the younger generation to chat with whom their parents approve. The parents can download the app on their child's phone or tablet, set up their account and approve contact with whom they are allowed to chat, send text and videos, from Messenger Kids Controls panel from their main Facebook app. But why Facebook is doing so.

The director of WS Centre, a highly acclaimed Dubai Web Design Agency says that "Getting the preteens to use an app launched by Facebook is a great way for the social networking site to finally make a contact with the user group of less than 13 years. For the past many years, Facebook is losing some of its preteen users to its counterparts like Snapchat or Instagram, fortunately, Instgram is Facebook's own property. It wouldn't take a mind of a scientist to understand that a kid who is using messenger kid, developing its own network of contacts, with prior approval from their parents will eventually extend to using the main Messenger app when they will be all grown up." He further adds, "Facebook is making the security of Messenger Kids app its main priority. The kids will need their parents account to create a profile and add new contacts also, the kids won't be able to delete the messages they send and receive and parents will be instantly notified every time a kid reports a message."

He now addressing the problem says, "Despite the security features Facebook has instilled in its messenger app, the launch of the app alone has stirred a significant debate among families. With students losing focus due to the surge of social media and parents working hard towards reducing the number of time kids spend in front of screens, was it okay to toss another hit towards them? Was the messenger app really necessary to launch in the first place?" He further says," Well, we are still uncertain as to how the app will impact the lives of small kids, but the mixed reactions we are getting from the parents clearly indicate that the balance is hanging more towards the No-No side."

"While Facebook's latest move is an example of how companies are struggling with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, the parents are still not convinced if their kids should be allowed to explore the nooks of social media at such tender age. This act, in fact, requires the companies which are targeting preteens to look hardly towards their privacy and security. For many years major tech firms were abiding the rules of COPPA, by not taking young teens into the fold, but as the technology is sneaking its way into the lives of individual of almost every age group, children have become a more attractive market."
